After a week of being apart we re-grouped and caught up during a very long bus ride into the sunny city of Flores in Peten. During our time there, we had the opportunity to visit one of the world’s most beautiful national parks- Tikal. As we explored we learnt about many different historical landmarks and temples. There were many diverse points of interest from tombs of rulers and places of sacrifice to ball game courts and celebration complexes. Also explored was a unique platform known as the “Lost World”; The Great Astronomical Observation Pyramid where the Mayan people went to study the Milky Way from a height of 90 feet.
Tikal is not solely a place of temples, pyramids and structures, but a tropical rainforest habituated by exotic wildlife. Among many animals some we came into contact with were Howler and Spider Monkeys, Koatymudis, Red Lored Parrots and Crocodiles. Tikal was an amazing experience that was enjoyed by the whole group. It was an unforgettable place where we learned and explored this sacred and antique area of Guatemala.
